sprocket size change

Post by lafarmer@peoplepc.com » Mon Jan 23, 2006 8:17 am

Im thinking of going to a 14 tooth front or a 46 rear or maybe changing both for better dirt performance. I like to run at about 80 mph on the hwy. what advice do you guys have, will it be to much strain for the hwy speed and does it help a lot in the dirt.Im also looking for a cheep rear spare whhel to put a knobbie on.

La Farmer, I suggest for what you want to do you consider a 45 tooth rear. That's easily available in the states. On the front use a 16 tooth for the 80 mph runs and put a 14 tooth on for the dirt work. I think the 80 mph will be too fast for a 14/45 combo. I try to not go over 5,000 rpm for sustained operation. But I don't go 80 mph either. The 14/45 will be amazingly better for the dirt compared to the stock 15/43. Check with Fred at www.arrowheadmotorsports.com for the Jake Nut or equivalent for the countershaft sprocket. Using that I can change front sprockets in less than 20 minutes from stop to start if I want. I wonder, could this perhaps be an aftermarket connector for a battery charger or some other aftermarket widget that someone added to the bike at some time in the past? I know if you looked under the seat of my bike, you would be quite puzzled at what my wiring looks like! -E

80mph on the highway on a bike with 14:46 gearing and virtually no wind protection? Are you talking 1 hour or 5 hours? The motor may not break but it's lots of revs, and you may not like the 80 mph wind. There are riders on this list who can and have done more than 8 superslab hours but in reality they seldom ride 80. If you've done it, good. If you haven't it might pay to try a long ride before too much talking. I've done a 500 mile all-daylight ride with the stock windscreen and 16;43 gearing. The bike seemed happiest around 70 but the wind will take it's toll on you. The mighty KLR is no serious dirt bike it can be made significantly more capable with a wider range of gearing. I've done some fairly slow technical trails but I change sprokets to suit the conditions. With the stock 43 I wear 1 and carry 3 c'shaft sprokets. For instance to cover many miles to get to a riding target I'll run a 15 OR 16 c'shaft. When I see the difficulty of the trail I'll change to a 13 or 14. Even with the lowest gear you won't ride with the KTMs or wide ratio Honda or Yamaha 450s. But you have a chance of getting through. They would be impressed even you show up 30 minutes after they've arrived. The KLR will do about everything else better than they can like a moderate loop of 150 miles with no gas stops during; or a 300 mile afternoon ride on pavement. They won't be there, you can. There's a lot of new and inexperienced riders on this list so be critical of the postings.
