Save some money and buy these. Best $50 I have spent. Two years used these gaurds many times and they are tougher than me or the bike. Has anyone tried these: The Wacker handguard system. Mounting kits are available only for normal 7/8 cross braced handlebars, Magura tapered handlebars, Answer/909 Pro Taper handlebars and Renthal Twin Wall and Fat Bar handlebars. If so, what size should I buy and do I have to modify them to fit the KLR. For those interested they have them for sale on ebay for $36 plus $10 shipping and handling. Item number: 4596536587. I just put the $25 tusk handguards on my KLR. I had Cycra's on it until I moved them over to my new trail bike. They are easier to fit than the cycra's and fit the KLR great, are but have the same weak link. The bar ends use a compressed rubber tube to grab the inside of the handlebar. It's not hard to imagine how easy these could twist and wipe out the front brake master cylinder. As I did with the cycra's, I will need bar ends with offset aluminum inserts which are much less likely to twist when tested. Kevin

I've never had a problem like that with the Tusk's. The Tusks do give a little bit when they take a hit much like the levers, which will keep parts from being broken. If any of these parts are too tight the will break if they take a good hit. The Tusks and Maier handgaurds are some of the best and most used safety equipement I have installed. Anything you can lay the full weight of the KLR on and not worry about it breaking is good in my book. Much cheaper than levers and mounts. Jim Fortner Plano, TX

You simply need to do proper research. I tested my Emgo set by doing a very hard 20 kph high side onto pavement. They held up well but I'll admit that other makes may be better.
