Wondering if changing tail light to an LED would make enough difference for additional electrical accessories? MTC

Mike, Probably won't make enough difference to be worthwhile from an electrickery savings viewpoint. But the Dual Star LED tail light is pretty nice. I've got one and it really lights up the back of the bike when riding and also when braking. It has a couple of different flash or no flash modes. A month or so ago I posted about some current draw tests I did on my bike. Below are the results. Remember I have the LED taillight and not the stock lamp. What electrical accessories are you considering? I think this only taillight & instrument lights. - With the headlight on, key on, I got a reading of 5.43 amps. Low beam drawing 3.92 amps. - With the headlight on high beam, key on I got a reading of 6.10 amps. High beam drawing 4.59 amps. - With the headlight off, key on, fan on, I got a reading of 3.83 amps. Fan drawing 2.32 amps. - With the headlight off, key on, horn blowing, I got a reading of 3.08 amps. Horn drawing 1.57 amps. - With the headlight off, key on, Dual Star LED Brake light on, I got a reading of 1.93 amps. LED brake light drawing 0.42 amps. - My heated grips are on a different circuit and I got readings of 1.55 amps and 2.75 amps. - My Gr8 Design heated vest pulled 2.21 amps. - I didn't test my heated gloves. My battery was reading about 12.05 volts. Yes I know I'm on the verge of battery failure. The wattage for the stock bulb vs. the LED module is on the Dual Star web site. It appears that the LED module saves about 8 watts in running light mode (saves more when you have your brakes on, but you don't do that very often, do you?). 8 watts is 8 watts, combine with another 8 watts by replacing the lamps in your instrument panel with LED's and you have enough juice to power a pair of electric gloves, but that's pretty much it. _E

I am experimenting with Grote LED's and SuperBright Led's on my KLR, as soon as I get the fit and finish looking good I will post some pictures. I added running lights to the front of mine, the mounting looks great, but man do they zap my battery. SO... But the LED's is the direction I am heading. I am wanting to add some sort of driving lights and maybe eventually get a heated vest. I was thinking of using 35 watt lights. Mike, You should be ok with two 35 watt driving lights if you aren't using much else. You only have about 90 or 100 watts to play with. It depends on what year you bike is. But if you don't use the heated vest at the same time as the driving lights you shouldn't have any problems. I believe the tail light bulb is 5/21 W. Hence, 5 W for the light and 21 W for the brake where does 8W comes from ? --karim

Well. I guess I should chime in here as I had a 2001 KLR and after two years and 18k miles I had done every change the list could come up with. I now own a F650GS 'Dakar' .. and the only reason I have it is because when looking for another KLR .. I found it for $5K .. Almost brand new! Couldn't pass it up. So what will I replace the F650 with .. most likely another KLR! THe reason being that the KLR is a 'platform' from where you start .. meaning you can fix it and tailor it to the way you want .. tons of aftermarket stuff and a place like Fred's to get it all. THis is 1/2 the fun of ownming a KLR .. you can do it yourself! I won't have a new BMW .. because they have them so locked down with their black boxes and can-bus technology that everything has to be done by the dealer (read $$$) ... I'll stick with my 94 R100M and 01 F650GS 'Dakar' for now .. the R100M will always stay .. not the F650. My $.02 Al Maurine Tucson, AZ 94 R100M 'Mystic' 01 F650GS 'Dakar'
