After running full-knobby DOT approved rubber I think 4mm IS bald.  
 "Subjective" is the key.  If you only ride on pavement then replace the 
 rubber before you get a ticket.  If you're seriously into going places no 
 man has gone before then you need real tires.  As you bought a dual purpose 
 bike, you probably fit somewhere in between so make your decision 
 accordingly.
 
 I've ridden full dirt bikes for many a year and always enjoyed that "brand 
 new" knobby traction.  Tire bite in the rough stuff decreases noticeably 
 after a few hours of riding - as soon as the leading corners of the knobs 
 start to round off.  Serious racers often replace their tires every event 
 for this reason.
 
 When I used to run dual-sport tires, I would cringe when I saw a mud puddle 
 - the tires would just load up and it was like riding on grease.  Happy was 
 the day my local dealer showed me that set of full-knobby Pirellis.  "I can 
 run THOSE on the street?" was my first question, I didn't even ask the 
 price. 
  You can bet I'll replace them long before any cop breaks out his 
 tread depth gauge.

 new to list -- currently running a '90 KLR (bought new in '90) with no plans 
 on changing.  In a previous life I ran Honda XL and XRs.  In my opinion, 
 paved roads just connect my house to where I want to ride.

Just picked up a used KLR (A15). Love it. I now spend most of my time saying 
 "Awe, that's all right" to my beloved BMW as I crank up the KLR for a spin. 
 The front tire is a Dunlop something or another with knobby type tread. Ity 
 works great, holds air and everything. There is obvious wear on the front 
 tire. Looks normal with more wear on the center, and little nubbies still on 
 the edges. At what point of tread wear should I get concerned?  In the past 
 I"ve dumped the bike tires when they crack cuz they never really wore out.
 This leads me to another question. The general talk in BMW parlance is "buy 
 the best tire you can afford because you only have 2. If y ou're going to 
 cheap out, don't do it on tires (or helmets)" BMWphiles swear by Metzlers, 
 Avons, Connties and so on. All high price booties, yet the KLKR site 
 supports the cheapie Kendas and IRC's. (This same philosophy goes with the 
 oil too).Is thte KLR just that kind of bike or are some brand riders just 
 more anal? Does Chen Shin make a tire for hogs?

Folks:
 
 I am looking to buy, borrow, or steal a 2X or 3X tele-extender to fit the
 older (SRT) 200 series of Minolta SLR cameras.  The specific camera it will
 be going on is an SRT-200.
 
 My daughter will be leaving for Africa this w/e and will be there a month
 working in the field (Kenya), and we'd like to add this accessory to allow
 her to get up front and personal with the widelife she'll be working around.
 
 If you happen to have such an attachment laying around that you'd be
 willing to part with for a bit, or permanently, please contact me off-List.
