I was all set to buy a 2004 KLR, actually have a deposit on one.
Then there was a discussion on here about the V-Strom, which I had
never heard of. I did some research and then went and rode one, and
now I am totally sideways. I know these are different bikes for
different purposes but I can only buy one. I do more street bike
riding than off road, but I do like to go off road from time to
time. Please do not say "Buy Both" because I can't do it.
Looking for any insight, things to consider etc...
Thanks in advance.

In the long run, which purpose is going to tickle your fancy the most? You might start by making a list of what you like about riding and the type of riding you like to do. Rank them by importance then figure out how each bike fits your preferences. v-strom or klr 650
Rob,
That's a tough decision!
I have a DRZ400,KLR650 and a Strom. When a bought the Strom the KLR
was supposed to go BYE-BYE. I still own it though:
The V-Strom is great on the highway, gravel roads & backroads. The
KLR is OK on the highway (great seating position though) and can be
riden agressively off-road with good tires. I did a 4300 mile trip
out west this year on the KLR and was impressed with the fact that
you can run 500 miles with it.
Of course now you have the DL650 to consider as well!
Good luck

I will keep my KLR of course-----but I would prefer the mini-strom (650
V-twin) coming out for 2004. In fact I may just add one to the garage as I
love that little V-twin motor as I had one in a SV650S.

Rob,
Just out of curiosity, how many rpm does the V strom need at 60 mph.
My KLR w/ a 16 tooth front sprocket does 4400 at 62 mph (100 kph) and I'm
wondering how much difference there is.
Thanks
