Help a KLR newbie here. I want to hook up a 12V lighter outlet to
power my GPS and air pump (not at the same time). I plan to hook it
directly to the battery, route the wires under the tank and mount it
on the handlebar.
A) Is this the best setup?
B) Any gotchas you can think of?
C) Is it a good idea to put an inline fuse on the wire (10AMP?)
D) How do I remove the tank? Do I need to drain it first? (told you I
was a newbie)
Thanks,
Guy

Hey Guy - I mounted one yesterday on my 650. I got a waterproof one from WalMart in the boat section. I ran my wires from the battery and put an inline 10 amp fuse close to the battery. I did not remove the tank. I looked up under the tank and was able to route the wires through some places that would keep them away from the engine. I mounted the outley on top of the right side radiator shroud as it was about the only place I could find to do so. When mounting one on my Honda today, I mounted it using double-sided tape. Hope this helps. Ride safe Jim> on the handlebar. > > Thanks, > Guy > > KLR650 A13

Absolutely. Thanks! One more thing - how did you hook it up to the battery? Did you use those crimp-on loops at the end of each wire? Thanks, Guy> Hope this helps.

Guy, What is best is what works for you. One thing you might want to consider is that the cigarette lighter setup is not waterproof/rainproof. You might want to think about a two wire SAE trailer connector. You can get these from most auto parts stores in their trailer/wiring isle. They are waterproof/rainproof, but not as convenient. The SAE connector also requires modifying the wiring on your pump and GPS. If you are not comfortable with that, don't do it. As for the fuse, absolutely. Check the power requirements of whatever you are hooking up. It is usually on a tag somewhere, and is generally expressed in amps. If it is expressed in watts, the formula is P=IE. P is power in watts, I is current in amps, and E is volts. Get a fuse that is close to whatever your pump or GPS is rated at. If you go too high on the fuse rating you could melt your accessories (worse case scenario) and possibly start an electrical fire. You don't have to drain you tank to remove it. But it will be much lighter if you do. The petcock is vacuum operated and should not leak. (That also means you can't just open the petcock to drain the tank.) As a safety precaution, you should turn the petcock "OFF" anyway. On my A15 (and I think they are all fairly similar) you start by pulling the sidecovers, then the seat. Remember that there are vent hoses in addition to the fuel lines. As I recall, the attaching hardware is fairly obvious. There are some well illustrated links thanks to our more computer savvy listers. Check back through the messages. I think Mark's page on valve adjustment had some excellent photos, including tank removal. Just go slow, have fun, and let common sense be your guide. I have heard of some bicycle assembly instructions in Japan. Step one is "Be at peace. Then proceed to step two." Good advice. Bill A15> was a newbie) > > Thanks, > Guy > > KLR650 A13

My '02 had two loose wires (activated by the ignition switch) with female sockets on them behind the fairing. I simply crimped
male plugs on the end of the lighter plug's wires and plugged them into the female sockets. Then I double sided foam taped the lighter
plug to the "fire wall" behind the headlight. The only thing is, the double sided tape will lose it's adhesive properties over the
winter if you live in a cold climate like Illinois. Mine popped off this spring. I think I'm just going to rivet it on.
Good luck,

Please make sure your side stand is in the up postion and all baggage is
stowed away in the over head compartments.
We know you have a choice, and we thank you for flying KLR Airways.
Common problem, lots of listers, by pass the saftey features on the KLR.
