It's not just your bike. My KLR won't start down a hill with a dead battery either. Needs a jump.

no one will start with a totally dead battery because the alternator magneto (whatever your want to call them) has to have some juice to activate the electromagnets that make them work. you could probably active them with a flashlight battery but they need some electric juice to start producing electricity. Wrong. The ignition system is totally separate from the battery on a KLR. And the (magneto) has permanent magnets. This means that even with a completely dead battery you can push start a KLR Jim

this is true for alternator, but not for magneto ( permanent magnets)...is it not a magneto in KLR ?

Yep, no battery necessary to start a KLR. I prefer to use the optional kickstarter or a compact tow rope or jump start. Bump starting a KLR on the flats is near impossible at least compared to a Honda 90. i've done this. wouldn't recommend riding long distances though if you can help it. will kill something... kickstarted my 76 goldwing in the middle of an indian reservation in arizona too. not a drop of liquid in the battery. had to ride a bunch to get to a bike shop.

Just wondering if the list has ever fooled around with ignition system and/or coil upgrades? Nology Engineering does some stuff with bikes (mostly Harley's) and I fired off the question to them as well. I have had great success with automotive upgrades but never messed with the motorcycle systems much. I haven't been able to find any info in searching the old posts here. Frank

I've push started my A9 with a dead battery. Multiple times during an offroad scouting excursion. Better done in 2nd gear, iffy sometimes, but I thought that the battery had to be connected as it was part of the circuit. Haven't tried it without one. t.
