I haven't taken it yet, but the Motorcycle Safety Foundation ( http://www.msf-usa.org/ ) has a new 1-day dirt-bike course. I don't know if it's any good, but I thought the Beginning Riders course was great when I took it. It probably can't hurt anything. And don't worry about dumping her once in a while. Back when I was a lawyer, I had no respect for others who would never take a tough case cause they didn't want to risk losing. Anyone who doesn't dump their dual-sport once in a while isn't riding it very hard.

Ingo, There are only 2 kinds of dirt riders, those that have crashed, and those that will. The only way you will ever master your machine is to take on those areas that are challenging, IMHO. Gotta just live with it, buy some extra clutch and front brake levers and jump off when it falls. Go on dirt areas where you can jump/land/slide/etc, let yourself learn how to crash so you don't anymore. Sound stupid? Ya, it does, but it works. First week with my 250 all you would hear on the mud tracks would be Rrrrrr*"AAAARGH!"*WHUMP*...... *RrrrrrRRRRR*"AIIEEE!"*WHUMP*. Most fun I've had on two wheels ever since I decided to go skiing on my bicycle down dead mans curve. And now I don't crash that much anymore, learned to let the bike tell me how to go, just gotta remind it WHERE to go every now and then (GENTLY!), and go fast enough and light enough to let the front wheel hop those nasty ditches and stuff that other vehicles leave behind. Hi, Just been off road in average 2 to 4 in Hawaiian ice, believe me, 20 psi is TOO much pressure. I was advised to run 8 and 10, I ran 10 and 12, and that was a little too much. The advice was sound, watching the advisor ride as though it was hard pack. I do not run rim locks and as there is virtually no traction a tire moving is not a problem. So I wonder how low you can safely go without rimlocks on hardpack or solid rock. Any war stories that anyone wants to share? RM

RM- At the Meteor DS ride, I showed up woefully poorly shod for the many many many miles of deep sugar sand. My klr was wearing AM24's and the only way that I could even manage to maintain speed and control with the bike was to lower them down to ~5psi. I can't tell you exactly what psi I was running as my pencil gauge didn't register it and it's lowest reading was 5 psi. I don't know how much the tire slipped, but I never had a flat and the ride was actually fun once I aired down from 10psi. I think that the AM24's might be a bit of an aberration since they seem to have pretty stiff beads, which, I'm thinking, probably saved my ass. We did all the hero sections (none of which were sand, but hardpack dirt) and the bike and tires did great. The AM24's are a bit chewed up, but they made the 5 hour ride home fine. Hi Gary, No, I do not surf, bit old to learn Hawaiian ice is several inches of rain mixed with the local red clay, that acts like ice for tires, glue to plastic, dies all your clothes red, has a coeficient of friction of zero and can be from 1/8th thick to several feet.
