With all the talk of Marxism, California, hoof & mouth disease, power crisis . . .
What's better for the KLR?
Mobil 1 MX4T 10w-40
"or"
Mobil 1 V-Twin 20w-50
Anybody ever try Mobil Delvac 1 5w-40 100% Synthetic high-performance diesel engine oil in the gallon jug? http://www.mobil.com/mobil_lubes/onhighway/products_services/delvac1/index.html
Anybody have independent lab results on how they compare?
No I don't work for Mobil Oil, live in California, conserve electricity or subscribe to commie-pinko ideals.

Glen,
Having quite a reasonable knowledge of lubricants and applications, I would
have do go with the 10w40 for better cold start protection. Oil flow at
cold start will be quite a bit quicker as compared to the 20w50. According
to the gurus at Mobil Oil, up to 75% of all engine wear occurs at start-up,
when there is little oil around the cams, the low pour point of synthetics
and the resulting protection at cold start, are one of the major advantages
of using synthetic oils.

Glen,
Go to any large truck stop, you should find Mobil 1 5w40 (gallons only as
far as I know). That is what I used in my Chevy 3/4 ton truck w/ the turbo
diesel engine. If for some reason the truck stop does not carry it, look
under "oil suppliers, wholesale" in the yellow pages for a Mobil Oil
distributor, they will either carry it, or worst case, can order it for you.
Hope this helps.

My local WalMart has Delvac, Rotella T and some other brand that I can't think of in 1 gallon containers for about $6. The weight is 15w40 not 5w40. Also, my local Auto Parts store carries it too. Brad> Hope this helps. > > Marshall in Afton, Ok > '95 KLXC3

Mobil 1 (5w-40) is a full synthetic oil. About $18.00 a gallon. The
15w-40 for $6.00 a gallon is regular oil.

RM,
I'm currently using Valvoline Premium Blue Diesel in the gallon jug and I've
add about 2 ounces of STP Red on my last 2 oil changes, can't find the black
bottle of STP anywhere, and my tyranny has shifted really well considering
the stories I've heard on the list so far. Might be my KLR tranny but I'm
sure the ZDDP boast can't hurt. The 20-50 auto oils apparently by nature
have more of the ZDDP additive already in the oil.
The only real bonus I can see with going with 100% synthetic is the better
cold start-up protection and it's ability to tolerate the short trips I
take. Probably 30% of my riding.

I would bet that most of the lubricants discussed on here are great
for most riding cases. I am going to keep using Mobil 1 because I
used it in my Yamaha 490 in the desert and in temperatures that were
wholly unnatural and sustained high speed sand wash riding. I prayed
for at least a short strech of flat so you could take your feet off
the pegs and spread your legs to cool your hiney. Also pretty lazy
about changing the juices. That little machine "never" had a
problem. Of course it may not have been manufactured on a Monday or
Friday either.

purity of the ride
There is no way one can overstate the validity to these points
Andrus...........kudos.
Especially valuable in my mind are points 1,2,3,4,6,8.
This is really wise rider information..........priceless,
worth countless miles, or counseling fees........
