Thanks to the many who responded to my quest for information. I guess it's
unanimous that I have broken an axle shaft.

I reveived several good suggestions including Bob Granau's info regarding a
tapered shaft. I talked with Phil Marino today and learned that he has
machined some axles that sound very much like what Bob described. Guess I'll
go with that - he's just minutes away. Phil told me how to extract the shaft
etc. Wish me luck - The most I've ever done was install brake shoes.

Thanks for all you advise!! I'll let you know how it turns out.
