Fellow Listers,
I have a problem and need some suggestions on how to solve. TC0604 will not
start. Battery reads 12 volts. No tick from the fuel pump when I turn on
the ignition. No red generator light on the dash. No lights, no map light.
I went out this morning and got map light, fuel pump tick, etc. Pulled on
the starter and everything went dead.
Can you suggest where I should start looking and how?

First thing that comes to mind is a dead battery. An open circuit lead acid
battery could read near 12 volts but have very little charge. A fully
charged 6 cell lead-acid battery will read 2.15 volts per cell open circuit,
or 12.9 volts. The same battery, fully discharged will read 1.9 volts per
cell or 11.4 volts. The state of charge is linear so that if you subtract
11.4 from the measured voltage, then divide by 1.5 and multiply by 100, you
will get the percentage of charge. As an example, if you measure 12 volts,
the battery has 40% of its charge remaining (12-11.4)/1.5 x 100 = 40.

The prize goes to David in Bad Soden, Germany, for the answer. It was a marginal battery that finally gave up the ghost. "course I should have figured since it was a eight year old battery.
Many thanks to all who responded so promptly. This List is a great resource!
Now, on to the other problem that developed over the Winter. No brakes. Pedal to the floor. Since I had brakes when I put it into storage, it is pretty clear that something perished. There are no leaks. With no hydraulic pressure, I conclude that the cup in the Master brake cylinder has packed it in. What may be instructive is that I have not touched the Master Cylinder for over 25 years. As you know, it is a real pain to remove so why fix what ain't broke? Well, sudden no brakes might be a motivation. Anyway, I think I bought a lot of that 25 years by using silicone fluid. Does anyone have a fix on a reasonable cycle for rebuilding the brake system?

It should have a reading of 13-14 Volts to delivery 12. They can read 12 and still be dead. Try changing out the battery with one you know is good, or at least checking the cells to make sure they all have enough water in them and charge or have the battery charged. To me it sounds like a classic dead battery. I'd start there first. David TC 3896 Bad Soden Germany [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
