Brake U washer - summary of responses

Dear All,
Thanks to all who answered my query about fitting the U-shaped washer which
holds the brake shoes at their pivot.
Advice was:
Simply push it on but with open side downwards - 3 votes (including one
piece of advice to drill a small hole in the washer to enable it to be
turned with an awl)
Pinch the ends together - 2 votes
Throw it away and fit a proper circlip - 1 vote.
