Fw: noisy clutch release bearing

The clutch release (throwout ) bearing on my 48 TC (California car)
has started to make an occaisional gnarly noise, when in neutral idling and
in first gear, and some times other gears driving off. It is usually quiet
once in higher gears and moving down the road. However sometimes it does
begin making noise on and off in 4th gear. Other than pulling the engine to
get at the clutch and replace the bearing, is there any other adjustment
which can be made to help? How many miles might it go, ignoring the noise,
without dealing with replacement? I will be going to California to Mike
Goodman's farewell party next month, and wan't to drive the TC around some.

What is the noise like Gene. Whistling, squealing,
chattering or something else?

Gene,
The clutch release bearing should make no noise at all in neutral or when
the clutch is engaged in any gear. The clutch return spring should keep the
release bearing off the clutch when your foot is off the clutch pedal.
However if the release bearing is making noises when the clutch is
dis-engaged, ie your foot on the clutch, you probably have to pull the
engine to replace the release bearing. Possibly a clutch problem? Possibly a
release bearing problem?
Owners should make sure the release bearing is pulled clear of the clutch by
the return spring when the clutch pedal is released. Otherwise the carbon
thrust plate on the release bearing wears quickly as it is in constant
contact with the clutch.
Install a clutch pedal return spring. Then make sure there is free play
between the release bearing and the clutch by adjusting the chain length as
indicated in the TC Instruction Manual, page 77, to give minimum 1" free
play at the pedal. Finally adjust the clutch stop to give an additional 3"
operating travel.
If the noise is not too bad, you can probably drive the car for a while.
Worst case, the carbon thrust of the release bearing is worn away and you
are making metal to metal contact between the steel of the release bearing
and the clutch.
