TC flex oil pipe conversion

Post by Norman Verona » Thu Aug 01, 2019 6:56 am

As you may know I've fitted the flexible pipe kit as made by Roger Furneaux and supplied by the Octagon Car Club. I've had a problem with them but have solved the problem.

See http://www.lotus7news.co.uk/db_09_18.htm here for full story and pictures.

Friend

To all of you who asked about the end fitting for the support bonnet bar I found for you a site that offers similar parts. They will need some machining

and adding a lock for the spherical bolt.

I also found the fork end for the support bar see bellow

Benny

Friends,

I built a bonnet support for my 1947 MG TC.  The idea was not to change the original bonnet or firewall by drilling new holes, and if required can be easily transform back to the original stat. I sourced some parts that were used in aviation (fittings that supports execs panels..)  Under the aft AMAL latch I installed the hinge for the stay bar, under the front AMAL latch I installed the catch for the rod when stored. On the firewall under one of the bolts (on each side) I installed a fitting that holds the rod when he bonnet is raised.

I will add photos if one of you will kindly guide me how to uploads photos to the forum.

Regards

Hi Norman, That s very useful information about the flexible oil pipes. I am thinking of fitting them. Can Roger or others confirm if the problem you experienced has been overcome? As an observation on your blog it looks like you either have a very posh garage or are doing mechanics in your kitchen!? My worktops are oily plywood- in the garage that is.  Regards  Jeff Townsend N Cambridgeshire UK TA1957.  TB0489.  Sent from my iPhone

I too had pressure issues with flexible pipes I purchased off Ebay.  Got properly made one at From the Frame Up and all is good now.  The hole on the original ones was tiny - pure junk. Roger was surprised when I gold him how small the bore of the hose was. He wonders if the company who made them made a mistake. But someone else reported s 40% drop in oil pressure. tel: 0044 741 9905 741 From: Tweed lizandtweed@yahoo.co.uk> Sent: Thursday, August 1, 2019 9:26:04 PM To: norman verona norman@frenchblat.com>; jeffrey townsend jeff.townsend@hotmail.co.uk> Cc: mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com> Subject: Re: [mg-tabc] TC flex oil pipe conversion   Hi Jeff, within the last 5 weeks I bought a pair from Roger to have in the TC tool box 'just in case' and though the bore of the banjo hole is difficult to measure accurately,  it's about 4mm, or 5/32" in old money .... which I have to say does seem on the small side.  As far as I know there has been no reports of an XPAG failing due to the lower pressure after fitting of these flexi's .. but that would not concern me as much as the probable reduced flow of filtered oil.  Tweed TC 0632 Cambridge UK

Norman, You have described Bernoulli's Principle at work. As a fluid meets a restriction in the size (area) of its path, the fluid moves faster at that point and its attendant pressure drops. I had a similar problem with my hydraulic lift when I added a coupling of smaller diameter than the hoses I was connecting. One lift cylinder would then rise faster than the other. Good to know that, at our age, we still recall something from high school. Wrenches & ale,James Beal

Hi Norman, Your original pipes look like they were made from steel silver soldered into the brass fittings. This type are quite robust unlike the copper pipe versions which work harden either from vibrations due to a poorly clamped oil filter or due to the repeated twisting of the connector fittings when the whole oil filter canister had to be changed. I've not come across any failure of the silver soldering, but often found fractures of the copper tubing adjacent to the connector fittings due to the stress concentration. I suspect this is why the ends of the fittings were eventually tapered as originally the ends were cutoff straight. Recently a fellow TC owner came round to show me his restored car, the first thing I noticed was a large oil pool on the drive. We examined the dip stick which showed the oil level was a cm below 1/2 way, sighs of relief. The copper pipe from the pump to the filter was the obvious culprit and I set about replacing the pipe with some 16 SWG copper tube whilst he walked back retracing his steps to see where the oil had started leaking. We came to the conclusion that if I had lived a mile further away, the sump would have been emptied by the time he arrived. Had I lived a mile nearer, the pipe would have fractured on his return jouney home, also emptying the sump. A case of snatching victory from the jaws of death. It took me a couple of hours to replace the tubing with copper, so it could be polished, and after checking the filter clamp was tight he was on his way home. I'm happy to use copper tubing again as the original 18 SWG was replaced with 16 SWG annealed tube, but more significantly the use of a spin-on filter adaptor precludes work hardening of the copper pipe due to the repeated undoing and doing up of the bolts securing the banjo connectors ( thus twisting the fittings) when replacing the original whole filter canister. Regards, Eric. ________________________________________ From: norman verona norman@frenchblat.com [mg-tabc] As you may know I've fitted the flexible pipe kit as made by Roger Furneaux and supplied by the Octagon Car Club.
