Tapered bearings 30304 and 30205. Be sure the bearings come with the races. The stock spindle spacer (bearing spacer) piece will be too short with the tapered bearings. Rumors that the proper (slightly longer) spacer for use with the tapered bearings is available somewhere. Duncan- CA --------------------------------------------

The stock spacer is too short on it's own when used with taper roller bearings ... not by much, but it doesn't have to be to lock it solid.   The correct running clearance is achieved by adding shims.  I've not heard of a  'one size fits all' spacer  for taper rollers and not sure that would work anyway.    The shims are readily available from either Roger Furneaux in the UK or Doug Pelton in the USA .... no doubt there are other suppliers. To make the job of setting up easier, I used a dummy spindle with slightly undersize journals and did it on the bench. Not so easy Duncan! The offset of the taper roller inner & outer races is 1.25mm, so you need at least 2.5mm worth of shims (funnily enough, it usually needs more than the theoretical 2.5mm). I recommend you trial fit everything first. I have purchased shims that would not fit without opening up the center a little and bearings that were to tight on the spindle making it hard to take off to add or subtract shims.  Just make sure everything will fit before greasing the bearings, etc.   Ed   In a message dated 10/3/2017 7:27:49 A.M.
