Rod ends

Post by Malcolm Taylor » Tue Jun 25, 2002 1:44 am

Viv, If you're not a slave to originality, and presumably you're not as you have a Datsun box, you could do what I did several years ago when I was scared by the rapid wear of some replacement rod ends. One of these (track rod) looked dangerously near to 'popping out' on full lock (With Bishops Cam box) after only 1000 miles. I therefore made up some new rods and fitted them with spherical bearings (Rose joints). They work well, are very positive, have shown no signs of serious wear in many thousands of miles and I feel much more secure on narrow, winding, hilly roads. I have not seen other T-types with this modification although many racers use such bearings in a variety of suspension situations. Best wishes, Malcolm (TA 1250) [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Malcolm, although I prefer to stick to originality if I can, especially where it shows, this sounds like a very useful safety related mod. I have nearly had the drag link end come loose; in fact it had come out of the cup, which had tilted in a worn bore. I found it bearing on the edge of the opening which is narrower at this point. The housing was wearing fast and it would undoubtedly have come loose at some time - with potentially disastrous results! I would recommend careful examination of these highly stressed components to ensure that they are correctly assembled, located and adjusted. I would like to see your rose joint mod. Any chance of a few photo's, or better still a diagram, which Walter could put on the website for us? Ian Thomson ------------

Malcolm My TC has been fitted with rose joints and I have no problems provided they are well covered in grease. The modification was carried out by Sreve Baker when he restored the car in 1991 Paul TC 3348
