British number plates

Last evening I had my 47 TC (3387) out on a run with the local Antique Auto Club of America group here in Fairbanks Alaska. We tour around to various places, park and talk to tourists. At one campground I met a gent visiting from England who looked at my English number plates: KMM 552 and said he didn't know what county they represented. He said that MM was the county, which he couldn't remember, and that K was the month of registration, November. This doesn't seem right as my records show that it was first registered on 10 Sept., 1947 and given that number. Maybe that was the dealer, as the stamps in the book show the first named owner as George Bramston LTD, 9 July, 1948 in Walthamston, Essex. Could it have been sitting at the dealer's place for 10 months without selling? That seems unlikely. Can anyone explain the significance of the KMM to a month and county? Gene Wescott

An afterword regarding the insurance issue; When I inquired, my State Farm agent pointed out to me today the exact language in their antique/classic policy: They've addressed it in writing in this way: "When used PRIMARILY for exhibits, clubs, parades, and public events, though NOT EXCLUSIVELY. " He explained that the annual top limit on miles, though either 3k or 5k miles, was set to allow for such things and tours and GOF's, or just hopping around for fun. They set value at something they call "true replacement value", based on the auction market, or the Kruse auction-results book. I'm happy to say none of our "regular" cars ever get driven much over 3k a year, let alone Heinlein or Little Blue. Sam Suklis

www.newreg.co.uk confirms that KMM 52 was issued by Middlesex County Council in 1947. As Tony said, the first letter has no meaning in itself. Dave KOC223

Anyone know why I'm only getting some responses to threads and not the original items? e.g. the one below from Tony? I've suspected this has been happening for some time. Are the celebrated boffins at Yahoo! to blame? Regards to all, David Lodge.

The first letter gives a VERY approximate guide to the year of registration. For example the museum-piece Rolls Royce Silver Ghost being AA 1 which is Hampshire, with no prefix letter. Hope this serves to confuse things Brit even more! Regards, David Lodge. ( a not-too-confused Brit!)

Interestingly, my 1947 MGTC had the plate KMM 333 BOb David Lodge wrote:
