Tacho

Thanks to all those with help re my XPAG cooling. here's another tricky one..... I haven't done anything work on the Tacho as its always worked perfectly, although only goes back to 300 rpm when stopped not 0. but its always been the same. I have had the cable detached while doing other things. When I put the cable back on and started the car on Sunday the tacho worked fine then suddenly went off the dial and stayed there! even when the engine was stopped. The only way to get it back was to detach the cable at the Dynamo end and twist and Voila it went back to 0 ( no not 300 but 0 ). then when I started again whoops off the dial. Does this sound like the Tacho it self is a problem or could it be the reduction gearing on the end of the dynamo > the housing of the gear does move a fair bit. any thoughts appreciated Charles Shiplee IMPORTANT NOTICE: This message is intended for the use of the person(s) or organisation (the Intended Recipient) to whom it is addressed. Charles, ignore the double reply on this as I only sent my reply to you the first time and not the whole list (which I am doing now). Charles, First make sure the cable is not binding. That can cause weird readings. I test my tach using a variable speed drill to turn the input on the tach for a test. I do not look for accuracy but only that it works smoothly. I recently had a pegging out problem on my tach. Turned out the timing portion of the tach mechinism was not working correctly and was counting revs over a longer time period. Define 0 on your tach. My tach has no 0 and looks like the lowest mark is about 300. If it is indeed hanging up, it sounds like a different problem. Maybe just gummed up in the works, which would also cause a tach timing problem. I suppose the needle could have shifted on the shaft also. Did it read correctly compared with an electronic tach and just not make it back to 0 or did it read 300 high over the range? If you are inclined pull the tach appart and give it a careful cleaning and relube. A very light oil works and one that doesn't gum up after age is better. If parts are worn then a instrument repair shop is in order. David Edgar, TC 5108 La Mesa, California

Anyone have a spare TA-TB tach with the wind-up clock? I have a very nice TC tach in the TB that must be replaced. I also have a few TC bits that could be traded, if you like. Best, Ray McCrary "Speed is Life; of course Luck and Altitude are helpful, too."
