Headlamps

Post by mgtc0604 » Wed May 20, 2009 12:19 pm

My thanks to all for your great help in getting the distributor back in the car, the car running nicely, and ready for some fine tuning on the timing. Ed Stanfield came up with a super way to static set the 10 degree advance, just use the width of three dimes BTDC!

Now, for the purpose of this interruption. I have replaced my headlamps with a set of PF770 in new buckets. As a consequence, I will shortly list the buckets I took off on EBay. They are the original buckets that came with the car. They have 7" step-down rims and are fitted with Lucas P700 tripod lights. Condition is good, no dings or dents. The chrome is good, but some 30 years old and some metal is showing through around the medallion on the off-side bucket. Clips and wire springs are missing (that clamp the rim to the bucket), but they have been that way forever. The lights need reconditioning. I will list the pair at $800 on EBay sometime next week. For you Listers who have been so much help to me over the years the price is $600. Also available is one PF770 lamp at $200. It is an original. I will post a photo of the buckets on the car in the gallery.

Headlamps

Post by Barry Cook » Thu Sep 30, 2010 9:55 pm

Hi Everybody,
I have 3 8" headlamp buckets for my TC and I have a problem. 2 of the buckets
(obviously replaced) which came with the car do not have the king of the road
medallions nor the hole, however they are dent free and are the exact same shape
as original. My question is what is the best way in creating that hole to
accept the medallions since that hole has two additional details. It has a
slight relief for the medallion to sit in and a small finger of sheet metal to
keep the medallion from spinning.
My other 8" bucket is undented, complete with medallion. If the above cannot be
solve , does any one have an extra bucket in decent shape ( chrome is
unimportant) with the medallion?
One other question. The flange that is riveted to the bottom of the bucket.
I've seen them both riveted to the inside as well as the outside of the bucket.
What is original for the TC?
Many Thanks,

Barry TC2324

Barry

To replicate the 'medallion' hole you would first need to make a round hole
of the appropriate diameter then make a special tool to form the recess
detail that you describe. Any decent machine shop will make a simple tool
like this copying the third bucket you have. The tool doesn't need to be
made from special material or hardened, just mild steel would suffice for
something that is only going to be used a couple of time to form this detail
in brass. Once armed with the tool it is a simple matter to form the detail
using a press. You can stop the medallion from spinning with epoxy.

Regards
Peter.

I think it might be a good idea to drill say a 1/4" hole first and then have
a 1/4" hole in both the punch and die with a dowel through them to keep them
in line. After forming the depression you could then open up the hole to the
appropriate size. I afraid if you made the hole full size before forming it
might be too big after forming.

A while back I purchased a set of headlamps on ebay thinking they might be for
an old MG. The number is R 40 made by Lucas.
The glass is 6.5" and the outside diameter is 7.5". The inner reflector and
ring both utilize the same 3 spring loaded keepers.

There are 3 guide pins for installing. Anyone have any info as to what model
these are off of.
Thanks Mike

Group, assuming thhat a standard TA dynamo output is limited to a safe continuous output of nine amps what power of headlamp bulbs are favoured? ...Bob. Wales UK. TA 0844.

hi Bob - 9 x 12 = 108 Watts, but using two 50 watt bulbs would not be
advisable! Other things take current too, not least sidelamps, indicators,
wipers, & horn. 36w bulbs would be best. There are modern halogen bulbs
(more light from less power).

cheers

With 108 watts available, have you considered acetylene gas lamps?
