Doug, MG Service Information sheet #15 says 6,000 lbs minimum, 12,700 lbs maximum press , to insert rear axle shafts into hubs. Any looseness or movement between axle shaft and hub means there are problems. You are correct in thinking the axles are pressed into the hubs. They are pressed into the hubs with quite a bit of force, actually tons of force with a hydraulic press. It may not be to long (depending on how much you drive the car) that you will be hearing a clunk (or is that clonk?) coming from the hub as it starts rotating on the axle. Let us know how or what progresses with your rear axle.
