Changing from Brooklands 4 spoke wheel to original 3 spoke on my TB

Post by MikeMarjot@aol.com » Mon Apr 03, 2000 9:30 am

Dear all,

Please help a technical novice!! (for 'technical novice' read 'complete
no-hoper')

I want to refit an original steering wheel to my TB. It doesn't look as nice
as my post war brown marbled finish Brooklands wheel but I like the idea of
an as 'factory fitted' wheel. (I promise to drive it lots Paddy honest!).

The wheel I think I have located is the early TC style, i.e. 3 all black
spokes with black boss but with a chromed MG logo plate on the boss front.
(fitted using 3 fixing bolts?). I believe these were actually made by
Bluemels. This style is, according to my research, and original photos, and
from Clausager's book, the correct wheel for the TB.

Now I have currently an original Bluemels Brookland 4 spoke wheel with 4
fixing bolts!

Now neither Sherrell nor any other 'authority' sees fit to mention steering
wheels, steering box yes, tons of detail, wheel NO!

I have a telescopic column with spline fitting and I would expect the
original TC wheel to have a spline fitting as it came in at the same time or
perhaps even later. (The odd thing is the wheel I hope to get is currently on
a pre 'telescopic' TA!!)

It must be a doddle to change over, musn't it. Taking the wheel off is no
hassle, but what's required 'under the wheel' to move from 4 to 3 bolts, fit
main steering shaft etc? What's required chaps? Please help a lad who has 'no
wheel experience'.

Or prove to me what I already know - NOTHING ASSOCIATED WITH MG Ts IS
STRAIGHTFORWARD.

P.S. The Body Number information looks really interesting, and I think we
will be able to draw some interesting and realistic conclusions and perhaps
advance this area of 'static' knowledge a little further. I am waiting with
bated breath for the information Roger Furneaux has promised from the
T-Register on TC body numbers. Unfortunately it is all 'manual' at present.
If anyone hasn't given me their body numbers please get in touch.
