Clint
Before you replace the steering box with a Datsun unit, I would suggest that
you find out if the ##box## is in fact the problem (maybe you've done this,
but your message doesn't say). You also don't say what symptoms you are
seeing (slack, stiff, wandering, etc).
Other prime candidates include saggy springs, worn or stiff/unlubed
kingpins, bent chassis, bent/loose/misaligned axles, steering box loose on
chassis, bent steering arms and more. Bearing in mind that the guy that
inspected it is most likely younger than the car, don't rely on his
knowledge as a check that the car is good order.
I expect that you will receive a number of messages urging you to fit a
Datsun box as the only way to salvation: and an equal number condemming the
change as quite unnecessary. I'm with the latter group.
When I first had a TC the steering was abominable: in this case the problem
#was# wear in the box. After replacing it with a reconditioned box the
difference was remarkable. We ran the car for some 75,000 miles, including
holiday trips from London to Austria, Italy, etc and never felt any problem
with the steering.
However, don't forget that the car is a prewar design: it won't ever steer
like a Lotus, MX-5, or other rack and pinion car. With the system in good
condition - and adjusted correctly - you should feel perfectly safe and in
control as fast as the car will go.

Hi Dave
I agree with your views re the TCs steering when I purchased my T C the
steering was heavy and stiff. I had the Bishop steering box rebuilt and now
she steers well. I can steer her on the move with one finger and No wander.
