				progressive 465 shock woes

Four years riding eith a Progressive 465 shock, and the rebound
dampening is toast. Cam adjustment spins without clicking until it
rolls over from 5 to 1, and never changes the rebound bounce. Out of
warranty and Progressive says they want $200 to $300 to fix it. Bit of a
bug in that I had the barrel strip on an earlier one when the adjusting
nuts cross threaded, and after shipping it to them, had them tell me it
wasn't repairable. Expensive mistake, but for the cost of admission on
these things, would like to think they'd last a little longer. OK,
miscellaneous whining aside, just thought I'd seek advice on options
before I drop another wad of cash into what is appearing as a
Progressive hole (pun bad, but intended).

 Thanks.

The Touratech Extreme may be worth looking at.  Priced like diamonds but over built to take it.  When I talked with Simon and Lisa Thomas at Overland they said the difference was night and day to what they had run before.  This pair has 11 years round the world on heavy loaded bikes off road In every condition imaginable.

I have a Progressive shock body with 8,000 miles on it that was rebuilt under warranty. Zero miles since rebuild. The spring was used on another project, so I can offer the body to you for $185.00 shipped.

I have seen this happen on these shocks when the Nitrogen gas has leaked out
or was let out of the shock. If you try to read the gas pressure with the
Schrader Valve you most likely will let most of the pressure out and most
likely damage an air pressure gauge in the process. You could try taking
your shock to a dealer that rebuilds shocks and see if the gas pressure is
gone. Have it recharged and see if your rebound starts working. That would
be the cheap fix, otherwise they can rebuild it and that won't be as cheap.

The only Guts from Race Tech for the KLR that I know of is the Seal Head.  If you have an oil leak on the rear shock this should fix that problem.  I can order but I don t stock the kit from Race Tech, but I do sell the one from Moose that is somewhat cheaper.  Haven t sold very many so I don t have much in the way of any feedback.  There are several internal bits you can get for the forks.  I sell the Race Tech Cartridge Emulators that work very well and are pretty easy to install.  Progressive Suspension also offers a Monotube Cartridge System to replace the damper rod in your KLR forks.  This looks like a great addition but I don t have much experience with this one either.   Fred

I second the Works shock.  The design is good enough that there is no need for any fancy adjusters etc.  The damping has a wide enough range that the shock works well for anything I have done with it loaded or unloaded--Copper Canyon, Prudhoe Bay, Divide Ride, Colorado, Moab........  Really great ride quality.
I have a steel body Works shock with reservoir.  It has more than 40,000 miles on it.  I rebuilt it once about 10K ago and it probably could have done just fine with an oil change.  Works Shocks are a VERY high quality component.  If I bought a new KLR this works shock would go on it and I would have no thoughts about it failing.  Works also stand behind their products and have helped me with some vintage projects over the years.
Cheers,
Doug

Nice follow-up JL.  Surprised they didn't want to see the hoops?  Having been involved in many NHTSA related issues, obtaining the product in question was one of the first things to accomplish.  Maybe they were confident by looking at the date code?  So many variables when considering tire wear issues it's difficult to ascertain at times.  Glad they showed good faith to you and in turn you did the same with this posting.
