headlight modulator experience?

Post by fw189uhu » Sun Dec 28, 2014 7:58 am

I'd never seen a bike with a headlight modulator (flasher or blinker) until yesterday.  I was amazed at how strongly it drew my attention to the bike, which can only be a good thing as far as safety is concerned.  Has anybody installed a headlight modulator on their KLR?  What do you think of it?  What is the best one for the 2008+ KLRs?  From reading the manufacturers' websites it looks like not too much work to install. My 09 already has a taillight modulator installed--I think it came from Dual Star but am not sure.  It sure makes my ride more visible to cars when I slow down, and it seems like a good idea to have one on the headlight too. Thoughts?

headlight modulator experience?

seems like it would be an issue for nighttime DARK riding. Trying to focus and also watch the shadows on the sides of the road, & ahead On Sunday, December 28, 2014 8:58 AM, "dhk@... [DSN_KLR650]" DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com> wrote:

headlight modulator experience?

Post by Fred Hink » Sun Dec 28, 2014 8:23 am

Headlight modulators have a light sensor and only flash the head light in the day time. My 09 already has a taillight modulator installed--I think it came from Dual Star but am not sure.  It sure makes my ride more visible to cars when I slow down, and it seems like a good idea to have one on the headlight too. Thoughts?

Modulated/flashing lights--Used to see them all the time in the 80's.Hardly ever see them now. shrug.Must be because there are not many Wings, and HD on rock strewn trails. I do occasionally see the flashing lights, though.3x since May; lights were attached to a shiny F350/450 and two attendants determined to get me to the hospital alive.and so it goes.revmaaatin.

My cheap, but seemingly effective solution was to wire up a couple of the Cree 12v lights at the end of the cowling mounts. Wired them to the running light wires. Brighter, different color light that seems to gain attention and is useful at night. Todd On 12/27/2014 10:27 PM, dhk@... [DSN_KLR650] wrote:

My KLR 1st Gen has two Rigid. 4 LED aux lights mounted on an aluminum plate mounted on the lower fork (triple tree) mounting bolts. With a 100 watt H4 cars seem me at night and day as something else and to be reckoned with as they look up from texting and thinking of turning left. Adding the relay kit for the H4. Extra output stator. Mark Landsailing in Nevada. Photos available showing beam pattern and installation.

headlight modulator experience?

Hi, I've had a headlight modulator on my KLR for several years and like it. Agreed that you seldom see them anymore! I believe it helps people see me, especially in hard-to-see times -- 2-lane road with mixed strong sun and shade, dawn and dusk, and multi-lane traffic. I believe it also helps on forest roads, where the quicker the oncoming traffic sees you, the quicker they can move over to make room. I don't recall the brand of modulator. I have it wired to run all the time on the high-beam, and it turns off at night. best, Chris

Also not on the modulator subject directly: I like to have a triangle of lights on the front of a bike. Haven't run modulator but sometimes think that I should because I do notice them.

The light triangle helps other drivers to identify the presence of the bike and provide a better reference as to size which allows them to better determine changing distance. The front signal lights can easily and inexpensively converted to always on with signal function. The driving light option can be as good an option or add-on to the signal lights...depends.

headlight modulator experience?

I have a Super Tenere now and the high/low beam function is not controlled by the bulbs but by a metal shutter & servo system inside the projector beam headlight assembly. The bulbs are single element H7 parts and both are always on. So, no modulator for it yet. =( However, I have had two different brands of modulators (: Kriss and Kisan) on several other bikes through the years. The Kriss part at the time was a rather involved installation on my old Honda PC800. After splicing into a key switched power wire, the horn circuit
and then running several wires places, it would temporarily slow the headlight modulation whenever the horn was sounded. Neat! Now, Fed. regulations and so on say if a modulator unit fails, it must fail so the headlight still works - for safety. They also must stop modulating the light once the ambient light drops below a certain amount - for night time normal use of the headlight.
After just over a year, the Kriss failed in the worst way at the worst time. On a rainy, slick mountain road in N. Ga., the modulator failed to stop blinking after dark with the light on high beam. Not only did it still modulate, it was doing so at an erratic and accelerated rate. I spent nearly two hours on the side of the road undoing the whole tedious installation just to get the normal high beam function back. When I returned from my trip, I called the maufacturer and got the owner on the phone. He was keenly interested until I told him I'd only had it just over a year. "Out of warranty. Sorry." Never mind his product was actually dangerous. I ordered a modulator from his competitor that very afternoon. I installed it in about 10 minutes and it worked fine until I tried to ride the bike. Electrical interferance from the ignition system had the light erratically modulating on low beam! I called them and the technician was super receptive. He determined that I'd gotten a previous generation of their product and sent me a better one in exchange. It was still working fine when I sold the bike a few years later. eddie
