Welcome to the list. I'm 99% sure that the '97 and '98 models are
100% interchangeable.

Nope, they've been the same other than color since '96.

Gents,
As you may remember, after doing the doo, there was a
whining, and then it wouldn t start, had to ferry it
back home on a pick up truck. Now two weeks later I
finally put the starter motor back. Before this I took
off the left cover and checked the starter gears and
stuff. Charged the battery to 13,56 volts, installed
the starting motor, it does not start. Aha, ground
wire from relay loose. Then tried to start, oh my
dear, what a terrible noise, now there is a loose
valve or something!! After a while I realized the
muffler pipe was off, to access the starter motor, so
then it started, and apart from the noise, all is well
in the KLR s tummy.
I think the cause may have been manifold, combination
of things, but I am sure something was wrong under the
left cover, which has been corrected now, without
knowing exactly what it was. Why wouldn t it start
running downhill? No idea. I can start even without a
relay, just hold the two wires together, so it is
still a mystery to me.
Before the doohickey operation I ran 800 miles with
Auto-Rx in the oil, when I drained the oil I ripped
the oil filter apart, to check for something, but all
was clear. Maybe now is the time to check the metal
filter under the right side cover. So most likely the
Thing will be running again in a week or so, if
inspiration keeps up. I got the rest of the afternoon
off, I also washed and groomed the YBR125, which is my
spare bike, so I have been busy today.
I inform you, because the guys that gave me advice and
suggestions may want to know. Unsolved mysteries we
don t like. Thanks, Jake.
