I have suggested changing Eldon's valve adjustment article since I made the same mistake 2 years ago. You are not alone. I have since read of one of these occurrences about once per month. The writeup should have a big caveat up front about plugging up the chain area with a rag before proceeding. Your only hope is to find it with a flashlight and fish it out with a magnet. If you do get lucky make sure you have a pair of long needlenose or tweezer to pick it off the magnet, or it will fall in even further. Keep in mind that every thing is magnetic and a good strong magnet with stick to almost everything except what you are after. Good luck. Regards, -svt- willoberg@... writes

I fear I'm in deep trouble here. I was going about adjusting my valves, having just found them slightly out of tolerance. Following Elden's excellent instructions, I was taking off the cam cap when disaster struck. One of those little hollow tubes that help locate the cam cap to the head came loose and fell into the left side of the engine, where the cam chain is. I've looked all over for it. I used a magnetic telescoping wand to try to get it, but it won't fit down between the where the two sides of the chain come together. I have no idea how to get the part out of the engine. I know I should have covered the gap with rags, but it's too late now. Any suggestions??

I haven't backtracked this thread, so if this has been covered excuse me. 

Our 93 KLR Several yrs back had similar issues. It would run fine until warmed up. Then stop and act as described  here. Turned out to be carbon buildup in the top end. When it got hot the valves would stick open just enough to make it not want to run. Cleaned out the carbon and all was well.  Terry Elliott telliott@...

I've never seen a jet that meters a fluid, that isn't round.  It doesn't make manufacturing sense and the math surrounding a shape like a Star would be cumbersome. not to mention it would be more susceptible to clogging than a circle.

What an I missing?
