carb verses injection? tech question?

BMW and a few others say you can NOT bumb-start a fuel injected bike, do to the computor protects it's self and shuts down under 12volts. I tried several times on my K1200lt, (still kind of warm.) going down hill on a road, ..... I had to jump it. Others (owners/riders) say yes you can. SO, can you "properly" bump start the average fuel injected bike?? [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Depends on the bike. Now that EFI has hit the motocross scene, bikes like the Yamaha WR450 (electric start and efi) are specifically designed to allow kickstarting (and subsequently bumpstarting) if the battery dies. The computer doesn't "protect itself", rather than they just stop working because they need a minimum amount of voltage to run. Usually when you get under 11 volts they start having problems. The Yamaha uses a capacitance system, which stores voltage for the efi even if the battery dies. For most bikes you'd be relying on the stator to produce enough voltage for not only the efi, but also the ignition system. So for most bikes it would probably work just fine, if you could get the stator to spin fast enough to get some workable voltage across. Ryan Phoenix, AZ mark ward wrote:

Hello all Been rather interesting reading all the chatter. This summer WY game and fish trapped and killed a 300 # grizzly a couple hundred yards from my house. I live in a farm area 65 miles from Yellowstone. Have rode,walked, skied, watched, and been around grizzly's and could tell some stories. Oddly the buffalo in Yellowstone when they walk within touch distance sitting on my Klr is more terrifying than a bear. Grizzly or Black most of the time are not going to come find out what the noise or rumble is. Where as the Buffalo are constantly around vehicles and people so they will walk right beside you without fear and I also have watched enraged buffaloes do some very destructive things to objects that they felt would hurt them. I don't open up the throttle when their beside me to say the least. Remember buffalo and elk do more damage than bears. When you hit one of these animals with your bike or snowmachine they usually live to tell the herd how stupid the human was. Ride our country like any where else you would worry about something hitting you and you will be fine.
