Oh so the story goes......l My brother and I were hiking in yosemite when we came across some bear sct. I took off my day pack and took off my boots and put on the sneakers I always carry. He said why are you changing shoes? It is no like you can run faster than a bear. I said your right. I only have to run faster than you. Next In Yellowstone an aver heard conversation........ A park ranger to hikers from the east coast. You are in bear country here so you should tie bell to your backpacks and carry bear spray which is made from hot peppers. The bells let the bears. Know you are coming and they do not like people so it lets them get out of sight. Hiker one asks why the bear spray? In case they need coaxing away. Just spray it at them. Hiker two what kind of bears are here? Reply two type black bears which are 300 pounds and pretty much pests in the campgrounds but not much bother on the trail, and grizzlies which are also called brown bears, which are quite dangerous. Hiker one..how can you tell the difference? Ranger..by their scat..black bear scat has nuts and berries and leaves and if by a campground garbage in it. And grizzly bear scat usually has little bells and smell like peppers. The secret to a good story is to understand that the truth should never get in the way of telling.

The conventional wisdom on the Smith & Wesson Forum suggests that a .32 is too much gun for bear. A ,22 will suffice.
