Sort of a Versys precursor. The motor has a 180 degree crank with a gear driven balance shaft so the use of a primary chain seems like a cheapskate Luddite engineering decision. I always describe the KLR as "The Jeep" of motorcycles, It's meant to be taken ANYWHERE AND EVERYWHERE and modified, LOADED down, EASY to work on OFF ROAD, etc.,
