I ended up in a 6 foot deep ditch with the bike on top of me such that I couldn't get traction to lever the bike off me. The rock was placed in the trail to keep cars out since the rail trail crossed a provincial highway at that location. The crash was luckily witnessed by a passing motorist who stopped and extricated me from my sodden and rather smelly resting place. Good thing he did since the trail was lightly traveled in that area and I was far enough below trail grade to be invisible. Lesson learned: pannier symmetry is more important that absolute width, I misjudged the clearance since the muffler-side pannier protruded further from the bike centerline than the left side. All of my pannier-equipped bikes since have been symmetrical within a half-inch.
