I'm still on the side of "make sure the fan is running the right
direction". But what the heck, you are in a good situation, except for
coming home...

Are you sure the waterpump is pumping? It almost sounds like the water/antifreeze isn't circulating. That might be a stuck closed thermostat, or the pump. As to the fan, you might be surprised how much trimming the blades, even just a little bit, might affect how much air it moves. That siad, I still think you aren't flowing coolant.
