I bought a "Ram Mount" for my GS3, and I mount it to the handlebars, hooked to a power port under the fairing. With the right apps you can have wonderful navigation with offline topo maps (for when you're out of coverage area). When you're in coverage, not only do you have a phone and GPS, but you have realtime weather, traffic, even severe weather alerts, restaurant and hotel finders with ratings, instant sharing of the photos you take, books, music and movies for campout entertainment and pretty much anything else you can think of. I actually don't leave home without one. On long trips I usually have two (work and personal) on different carriers. Gotta have a backup, right? It's so much more convenient to carry a smartphone than a laptop, or if I must have a larger screen I just throw my 7" tablet in the panniers, it's much smaller and easier to pack than a laptop. When I'm out riding, most people know to text me rather than call, and I get back to them at the next stop. Seems to work well. -Jeff Khoury

(for bike trips) Check out the program inSSIDer. It will show you EVERY Wi-Fi hotspot in your vicinity. Windows, Mac, and Android versions. Freeware. Very good. Scary to drive across town while logging. It will indicate the type of encryption and show open hotspots (entry beware!!!) (for bike trips) Most available free hotspots I have found are Starbucks. Actually, they may not be free. But they are very frequent. Most cheap motels have free WiFi too. Just park in their parking lot! Robert Wichert P.Eng. center stand welded ??? y or y not?

I'd like to thank all of you who provided info on the problem with my center stands bolts striping....... I have a follow-up question please.... "is there any reason that the center stand should not be tack welded to the frame itself?" Just a few tacks to help the bolts to not strip out the threads? I assume that the center stand needs to be removed to do certain repairs? And, if that is the case, can the tack welds not simply be burned off? Eddie My original post relative to this was .................. OK, I wonder if any of you have ever had the following happen to your KLR's Center Stand, assuming you have a center stand........... seven (7) years ago, I installed an after-market center stand, I think the brand is Afrika. A few days ago I noticed that the left foot peg was a tad loose, when I tightened it, I noticed that one of the two bolts that secures the center stand and the foot peg seemed stripped. I figured I'd have to take care of that soon. Today, when I went out to ride, the foot peg fell off! Fell right off! Seems that both of the bolts were stripped. The bolts, the foot peg, and the center stand show signs of friction wear. My guess is that over time, when I pushed up to get the KLR on the center stand, the center stand would move enough to wear out the bolts threads. No big deal, I have to re-thread and install new bolts, but have any of you all seen that before? Eddie
