I met another KLRista in Markleeville, CA the yesterday and we compared upgrades. His favorite was a rear wheel gear that was split across its diameter making a swap on the road real simple. No need to pull the rear wheel. I never got the name of the product or whether it was home made. Anyone else try it?
If you (from Placerville, sorry I didn't get your name) are on this board give me a shout because I'd sure like more details on that carburetor mod too. More power and better fuel mileage is hard to argue with.

This suggestion/invention (if I am visualizing it correctly) will pose some significant challenges for chain alignment and chain life.
revmaaatin. who is quite content with 14 or 16/46 sprocket combinations. and, no need to pull the rear wheel to do this combinations either.

mold release aand split ring
Split rear sprockets were very popular in the 70 to allow dp bike some semblance of flexibility as the engins did not have the rev range nor power output. I used one on my Hodaka.
Mold release...this is a required martial for tire processing. They come in two forms. Me that is sprayed ont the MPLA every so often. Thes can be sterates ( soap) silicone based , or wax based. The second is in the rubber itself. There is a lot of technical literature in the world on this.
The real reason however to take it easy for the first hundred miles is to roughen the surface. The rubber material takes on the smooth surface of the mold. This is not the best for traction. The first hundred or so scuffs the surface making for better traction. There is more to in ...re molecular orientation aaNd such but this is the basis.
Did the research making elastomers in aerospace.
