oil and air filters

Post by Bogdan Swider » Tue Oct 02, 2012 2:17 pm

Ages ago I purchased a reusable oil filter from Fred. I did that so I didn't have to carry filters on long trips. It's paid for itself needless to say. There is one problem: The grommets get hard over time - after a few oil changes. The parts lady at the local dealer we get along - found a bag of grommets; I think they were ten; they were not cheap nor expensive.I believe I'm down to my last one. Some opinion that the grommets not sealing is not a big deal however it makes me nervous. Anyone know of an after market source for grommets ? We use them in the bike shop and the only difference in the cartridge type filters are the cannisters. The K&N has the stamped metal 17mm "nut" on the end. The internals are identical. The Hi-Flow is only a little more than 1/2 the cost of the K&N counterpart. K&N and HiFlo KLR filters are the same except the price, too. They are well made. But, I found that the grommets on the K&N/HiFlo parts didn't seal well against the metal pipe check valve. I ended up robbing some from a Fram filter(which sealed much better). I could get a Hi-Flo filter + a Fram and make up one good filter for less than a factory Kaw. filter AND... The Fram came with a new cover o-ring. As for a K&N air filter? I wouldn't run one in my bike. Period. I bought a Uni two-stage foam filter and a service kit. -eddie -----Original Message-----

Hey Peeps. Long term observed trials rider here, recently bought a XR250R. been having a blast in the forest service roads and single track here in the land of enchantment. Going to do a fly and ride. Picking up a 2006 KLR 650 near Richmond Virginia and gonna ride it back to New Mexico. No real road experience, hell I just received my motorcycle license and my longest road trip has been about 2 hours. Yikes! I was told that all you need to ride around the world cheaply is a KLR and a milk crate. I will be riding for over 3 weeks. I may do the TAT through Arkansas. Gonna stop at my Mothers home in Kentucky. I will likely start a ride report, but not sure yet and if so, I will link you fellas. Wish me luck and any advice or suggestions is appreciated. A very long journey starts with the first step right? In this case, the first twist of the throttle, mileage ZERO.

<><><><><> <><><><><> Tony, Welcome. Riding the KLR can be as simple or complicated as you'd like to make it. The best advice I think I can give you for your three week ride is to keep a safe following distance from other vehicles and watch for left turning vehicles as they are the most likely to turn in front of/over you. Keep yourself hydrated and do what is fun for you. For the bike... check the oil every time you put fuel in the bike. Oil level is checked with the bike vertical on a level surface. If you can see an air bubble in the sight glass the oil level is low. Tire pressure probably needs checking every three days or so. MAP'S!!!! A GPS can make ALOT of Big mistakes. Some newbies feel they have to pack for "A trip" (3 weeks = 21 pairs of socks etc.) It only takes about as long as lunch or dinner to do a load of laundry, I go into the bathroom and strip down, and come out in my ride gear pants, then get redressed when even the cloths I had on are clean. Email All your cell phone & C. Card numbers, (any contact info needed) TO YOUR SELF, If your phone goes out (wet Etc.) or lost, you can go almost anywhere to get online to check for your phone list. When you explain your situation, Many places (bike shop, auto repair, campground, LIBRARY)will let you use there computor for urgent need's. Freds, and my local bike shop Info, is in my cell also. Since you will be learning on the run (RIDE) about the bike, Read up on where the KLR's fuses etc. are, and have back up's incase the seller did not have any on it. (ps. If needed tail lights are regular auto part's bulbs.) DRINK ALOT OF WATER, POWER AID ZERO, ETC., YOU WILL DEHYDRATE FASTER ON A BIKE, AND GET KILLER LEG-CRAMPS. (SINCE YOU HAVEN'T DONE A LONG TRIP, YOU WILL LEARN THIS REAL QUICK.) OH YA!!!!!! WELL-COME Travel Safe! travel Well! Mark (W. Michigan)

Take your time, if you have it, and don't try to rush too much. Since you indicated you don't have much 'road' experience what I tell folks is that every car is trying to 'take you out' all the time. Keep that in mind and always keep distance between yourself and all the other folks that are eating, talking, texting, having sex, changing the baby diaper, etc. They are out there. You didn't indicate if you were camping if so, as it's getting colder now, a good sleeping bag and some type of mattress as nothing sucks more than a bad nights sleep. As others indicated stay hydrated! On my first trip I found my hands becoming numb due to vibrations and ended up getting some racing type gloves with padding in the palms and fingers and that helped. Have a great trip and let us know how's it going!

I highly recommend Route 16 In and near Marion Virginia towards Tazwell , White Top mountain road, and Skulls Gap road. I did see a bear on that loop. Tazwell is not that far from West Virginia and Kentucky. Route 16 will give you a close approximation to the tail of the dragon (possibly better -less traffic and probably longer (up and down at least two mountains)) use your down shifting though, my rear brakes wouldn't do anything half way down the first mountain. And you won't have to detour as far south. I suspect you can find lots of dirt and two lane roads all through Kentucky and Tennessee. There is a TMOT for Missouri that will lead you to the TART you can get the files you need from this site: Bigdogadventures.com In general Mark's page will have invaluable information for you, like how to pack and the gear you need. I am not sure a milk crate will cut it for a 3 week trip, unless you really like to rough it, or are staying in hotels. Others will have much more useful info, my longest trip is 180 miles so far. Good luck. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Sears sells a 24mm x 22mm open end wrench that fits the axle nuts. Tube patch kit and bicycle pump with CO2 cartridges. Always build a bubble around you keeping traffic away. Hydrate, and when you get tired, take a nap. Good riding gear, with rain protection a wise investment. t. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Tony, I forgot to add in my earlier post... - Check fasteners each day for a few days. You'll quickly figure out which ones need attention and which stay tight. It only takes a few minutes if you keep the tools handy (phillips screwdriver and maybe 8,10,12 mm wrenches depending on how the bike is set up).
