Way to Tumu your ride bro! What you needed was one of those new
low-prof... er... "no-profile" drain plugs. LOL
At least you're experienced with QuilSteel repairs.
BTW, I have a couple engines that can be used as organ donors for
their case parts.

LOL... one of Tumu's trademarks is the ability to punch a rock
through a double-thickness skid plate!

I may need to talk to you about the engine case swap. If i can first test the engine to see if I did any other damage for the several miles I ran it before noticing. I only noticed because the engine started to make a horrible whirring noise and acted like it was about to seize. Probably not good. It may not be worth the effort to split the cases, but maybe I'm just lazy. ;')
As for JB weld repairs, I think it could be done, but not if I ever want to drain the oil again. The part of the case where the drain plug punched in is not quite straight, and the remaining broken bits aren't in one piece as I had hoped:

There are 3 pieces that have some of the drain plug threads, and it seems there are a few missing pieces as well. Putting it back together in a manner in which the threads line up and are usable will be impossible. Tapping a new drain hole may be possible, but I certainly don't have the equipment to machine a flat sealing surface for the drain plug washer.
The engine has 26K miles which isn't supposed to be a lot for a KLR, but when 22K are miles that I put on, that makes it like dog years, and you have to multiply by 7.

And, yes, the bike had a skid plate on when the damage occurred. It was removed to better investigate the damage. . .

Hello Tumu, I'm writing because after a long absence I subscribed to the list. Yours - the post below was all I've received since I was admitted several days ago. Is the list now dormant or did my subscription somehow not take. Sorry about your event . I guess it's easier if you choose a Harley and just go from bar to bar. Bogdan
