what safeties kill bike?
Remind me what safety switches kill the ignition? Neutral and side stand switches, right?
My 2004 KLR started dying suddenly yesterday. Sudden engine outage, no effect from wiggling the throttle or moving the engine kill switch. Each time it started running again before I came to a complete stop (I left the engine in gear so it would keep turning over). No backfiring or sputtering.
I recently replaced the battery, and had charging issues with the old one after reversing the cables during a jump start. Also had the side stand switch cover off, so I wonder if I changed something in there.
thanks,
Chris

There s also a safety switch on your clutch lever and the kill switch on your throttle.
Do you notice your engine trying to die when your gas tank is full? This is a pretty common issue I believe related to your gas cap vent being restricted or plugged.

Always look at what you worked on last.
Best advice I ever got.

what safeties kill bike?
Thanks all.
I'm thinking probably:
- sidestand safety switch, as I was putting the cover back on and pushing
wires under the cover.
- clutch safety switch, as it's been giving more trouble - needing me to
pull the clutch level all the way to the handlebar before the engine starts
(though I was thinking this safety only prevents starting, and doesn't kill
the ignition).
Possibly:
- neutral safety switch (I didn't think to check it when the bike was in
its dying mode).
- battery cables, as I just installed a new battery. Though I'm quite sure
I installed both cables, with locktite.
- ignition kill switch, though I moved it on-off-on-off-on while the bike
was dying, and it had no effect.
Probably not:
- fuel, as the bike ran fine for an hour after fill-up. Also, the bike fell
over in the garage and fuel leaked out, so I guess the vent is okay
Hard to remember all these things while the bike is bucking and lurching
its way along the shoulder of the road!
thanks for all the ideas,
Chris

Sidestand safety switch!
Yes, it was our old friend, the sidestand safety switch.
I like a backup, but would like something more robust than that 1960's era switch assembly. Maybe I should just put that rubber prong on the bottom of the side stand, like my old Hondas. It's supposed to flick the stand up just before it grounds out and wrecks you.
Thanks for the help,
Chris
