Living in an midwest urban area, my off-road opportunities are limited to dirt 2-tracks, gravel roads and the like. So I ride a "roadified" KLR650A - ('06 Red bought new, 25K on the clock) for more highway riding. Bridgestone Trailwings, 16 tooth front sprocket, X-ring chain, Grip Puppies, weighted bar-ends, full Nerf bars with highway pegs, Acerbis mini-fender, that $20 Wal-Mart ATV seat cover.
I can cover 250-350 miles per day on casual and group rides on a regular basis. But my biggest problem is wind buffeting and noise. A couple years ago I went with the MRA Touring Windshield +5.35" over stock. It was an improvement in wind protection and highway handling as it seems more laminar than stock. But it only raised the wind protection from mid chest to my shoulders (6'0", 220 Lbs, 32" inseam). I still get a full day of wind noise and buffeting at helmet level. Plus I'm interested in more cold-weather riding.
I've been considering other windshields but am worried about handling at highway speeds with a larger one. I've considered but rejected the larger Kawasaki screens as I've heard horror stories about the effect on handling. Plus they're butt-ugly. THe windscreen offering from TCI looks interesting. But it's expensive ($200) and web remarks indicate it needs to be modified with lower holes to provide real wind protection. And I am unsure as to the effect on handling.
I'd appreciate anyone's input or past experience on larger KLR650 windscreens on pre-2008 models.
Thanks,
Bob

Bob,
For whatever it may be worth... I like no wind screen on my 03 KLR. It
seems to keep me in clean air. I rode with the stock screen for about
1/2 mile and knew it had to come off.
Longest day on the KLR for me was 812 smiles. Coldest day I think was 5
degrees F. Wettest was three days in a row of regular, steady with some
hard rain.
I ride a bit slower than many with a top speed of maybe 65 mph. I like
50-60 mph more.
Just one more data point for you.
Best,
Jeff Saline

My MRA Vario screen ad-on (VTA 9) works well on a pre 2008 tall Kawasaki windscreen. Both are hard to find as Kawasaki stopped making the pre-2008 tall screen, and MRA only now makes the x-screen Vario add-on screen, however the 9.1 VTA screen add-on is available by special order from Germany by Twisted Throttle. No buffeting for me with 5ft11in, 32 in inseam rider. The VTA has 7 positions for more or less deflection. Mark in Nevada
