Over the holiday weekend of riding (a section of the CDT, plus 2 days on sandy/rocky singletrack) my tach has developed an intermittent function issue. After the 1st dusty ride (10-40 mph on CDT) it stopped working completely. When I hit the interstate home it began bouncing a little, then wide swings (3-5k), then after about 30 mins of that it settled down and worked fine. Next day on singletrack same pattern. Then this morning it was dead when I first started riding (usually it occurrs during the ride) and went through the same sequence, but this time it was working fine after an hour on singletrack. What am I dealing with here folks? Randy Sent from my Verizon Wireless Phone [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

<><><><><><> <><><><><><> Randy, What year KLR? I think if I was working this issue I'd take a good look at the connections providing power to the tach. I'd probably also pull the instrument out of the cluster/dash and make sure it was clean. But I'm guessing it's a poor connection somewhere. Thanks Jeff. I'll start at the cluster and work my way through each item until I find the issue. BTW, '00 year model. engine kill switch wiring question.

The starter button worked, the contacts on the kill switch were corroded badly. ________________________________ From: Michael Martin To: David Nichols ; KLR Group DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Tuesday, May 29, 2012 2:20 PM Subject: Re: [DSN_KLR650] Engine kill switch wiring question. AAAK!! My bad. It looks like I told wrong two wires. If I read the diagram correctly, now it looks like you don't short any of the wires together. You said the switch was bad. What are the symptoms? Will it engage the starter? Ok, but if I'm reading the wiring diagram correctly, won't that bypass the starter button and engage the starter? The bottom pole of the 2 pole switch doesn't look like it's connected to anything when in the run position... Search on Google for KLR650 wiring diagram. The first result will give you a diagram for a 1995 model. If your father-in-law's bike has the same color wires, as I expect, you will see that the brown wire is connected to the yellow/red wire when the switch is in the Run position. The other two wires are only connected when in the Off position, so in this case you will not connect those two. Just connect the first two I mentioned. My father in law has a bad right side engine run-off-run switch. It's a 2007 KLR650. He's ordered a new switch, but in the mean time which wires can he twist together to bypass this switch? He wants to use the ignition switch to kill the engine.
