<><><><><> <><><><><> Bryan, I'm thinking your rookie mistake is you didn't pay quite enough attention when you took it all apart. : ) I find that's pretty common with folks not trained as technicians. Once it's apart you can't check to see how something was before you took it apart so you have to assume it was ok. That is common for the claw washer to not seat tightly against the adjustment nut. When the upper triple tree and locking nut are installed it will be locked in place. On my 03 KLR650 the claw is about 1/2 the width of the adjusting nut. Just make sure the bearings are adjusted properly before putting on the upper triple and lock nut and you'll be fine. Make sure you properly torque the locking nut. It's common for owners to find them loose after rough travel. Glad you caught the issue and asked for guidance.
