oil again

Post by Ronald Criswell » Fri Apr 13, 2012 4:33 pm

I am thinking of switching to 10 W 40 W synthetic after running Rotella Dino 15 W 40 W for years on both my 99 KLR (54,000 miles) and 2001 Concours (60,000 miles). Good idea? Bad idea? Some seem to think the 15 W 40 W is too thick although I have no issues with either bike. I am running a 10 W 40 W semi-synthetic in my Versys Criswell

Many use syn with good results. Fellow poster KLRbugeater showed up at my house riding his SYN lubed KLR 650; from San Diego to central South Dakota, consuming gobs of oil. A through cleaning indicated oil weeping out the C/s seal. No seal available, so we changed the oil to carbon based oil, and watched it. Low and behold, 1000 miles later, no leak. Fast forward to the next winter. I installed SYN in my KLR and experienced the same problem as the bugeater--the C/s seal weaped oil. Changed back to carbon based Rotella, no more weaping. shrug. I still have 4qts of that syn still on the shelf. sigh. revmaaatin.

What brand? I used Agip 5W50 syn car oil in my Tengai from ~30K miles through 61K miles 'til last summer and then I found outit's now unavailable. Never experienced a leak. I have to change the oil for the summer and I I think I'll try Napa syn 15W50, which is actually Valvoline. Been running NAPA syn 15W50 (non-energy conserving) for 4-5 thousand miles with no ill effect. BUT, I have developed a very minor weep from around the cs in the last few hundred miles. -----Original Message----- From: Tengai Mark Van Horn Sent: Friday, April 13, 2012 6:34 PM To: revmaaatin Cc: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: [DSN_KLR650] Re: oil again What brand? I almost hate to mention this, but I had a weep there too. It stopped. I didn't do sh*t. Those are "Famous last words", of course... Robert Wichert P.Eng. LEED AP BD&C +1 916 966 9060 FAX +1 916 966 9068 ===============================================

my original engine spun the counterbalancer shaft bearing with Mobil 1 10-50 synthetic in it. I think Mobil 1 was a waste of money. Never had a countershaft bearing or seal problem. The easy way of checking chain by pushing the chain up against the swingarm helps. J#3

trunk cases - bestem brand ps:

Post by Eddie » Fri Apr 13, 2012 11:33 pm

PS: Mine came with a simple bullet-connector wire so you can hook the case up to the brake light. There's a small, illuminated red strip in the center of the lid. Also, GiVi or GiVi knock-off: Most seem to have a red trim lense that appears to be reflective. They're not. My former GiVis just had a white piece of tape behind the red lenses. It took about 3 seconds to realize I could get some reflective tape from the auto parts store and cover the white parts to make it actually work. eddie
