There has been some talk on this newsgroup about long trip so I post below my Travel List. How does it compare to yours? Note that I brake down what I carry based on the rooms in a house. The one glaring error is your underwear supply, which you can easily cut by 1/3. How? Here's how: Day 1: Wear 'em Day 2: Turn 'em inside out Day 3: Trade with your buddy. This is elementary. I thought every biker knew it.

Hello all, I have a 09' KLR650 and have been meaning to replace the rear subframe bolts with a kit from Eagle Mike for some time. Well, one more "they broke in the middle of nothing" story from this list and I ordered the kit last Monday night. It shipped Tuesday and I had it in hand Thursday at lunch. Cool! I finally had some free time today. So, I opened the package and read the instructions. Remove seat, tank, side panels, etc... Loosen muffler clamp behind the rear master cylinder. Loosen airbox to carb junction clamp.{So the whole rear subframe assembly can be gently allowed to move out of the way.} Hmmmmm. That seemed a bit fiddly. So, took off the seat and gas tank and surveyed the situation. The SW-Motech bars on my bike fit more or less. But, I remembered having to coerce the left half to line up so I could install the upper subframe bolt on that side. If something can be moved into place - it can be moved away, too. I put a small ratchet strap on the bar with the other end on the handlebars, midway between the clamps. That moved the crash bar away from the subframe bolt hole *just* enough. Next, I got out some aluminum foil and fashioned a protective sheet over the frame under where I'd be drilling. The foil conformed well and I even bent the lower edge into a "trap" for the metal chips. I used WD-40 as a cutting oil mostly because of it's rinsing effect when I sprayed it in the hole. It also seemed to keep the bit cooler,too. I left the airbox and muffler alone and commenced drilling a little at a time (30 seconds at a time). Yep, right through the hole in the SW-Motech spacer , subframe end and into the main frame. I stopped, sprayed out the chips, rinsed off the drill bit, cleaned up some of the particles with a magnet and continued. Little by little, I made it roughly half way through. {measured my progress with a long 1/4 drive extension bar marked with a Sharpie pen.} I'd only removed that one subframe bolt. So, I took the ratchet strap loose from the crash bar, stuck the old bolt back in the hole temporarily and attached the strap to the rear rack while I removed the right side subframe bolt. Also using the SW-Motech spacer on that side as a guide, I just drilled through the hole in the crash bar and across into the frame. Again, stopping every short while to rinse out the shavings and cool the bit off. Note: My 19V Craftsman cordless wouldn't even turn the 10mm bit into the frame metal. A trusty old Black and Decker 3/8" variable drill got called to duty and did the job well. It was a tad warm when I got through! LOL It wasn't long before the right side drilling met the left side hole and the bit spun in with ease. I put some waterproof grease on Eagle Mikes long 10mm bolt and it went in with a few turns of the wrench to help it along. I put on the self locking nut included with the kit and put everything back on the bike and my tools away. The two lower subframe bolts from the kit didn't take 5 minutes to install. I keep mine simple. Don't camp no more, stopped that at 62 years old, so all that stuff is out. Tank Bag W/ Map of area water bag, tube and bite valve notebook and a couple ball points Camera .380 Auto ear plugs mp3 player with ear buds Top box gets Chain lube Tool kit Tire repair kit and pump umbrella rain gear assorted stuff One Givi bag gets 2 pair of jeans 3 t shirts 2 long sleeve t shirts 2 pair of shorts 2 pair of socks ( Wash the shorts and socks and t shirts every night and dry them in the micro wave inthe room when available. One Givi bag get electric vest and gloves with wiring shoes laptop computer 2 towels assorted stuff. on the handle bars radar detector GPS generally use motel laundry services about once a week when available. Carry about the same stuff on either bike The KLR or the 1250S bandit. Just soft saddlebags on the KLR vs PLX givi on the Bandit. Andy Chesley Jennings, La.
