Jeff, I doubt you need a complete water pump like you'd do on a car. The seals on the KLR pump are replacement items. Probably a good idea to take a look at the Clymer's manual and see what's involved. It's really pretty simple if you're kind of handy and willing to think your way through the issue. It has oil and coolant seals and a thrust washer and o-ring or two as I recall. This would be a good time to clean your oil pump pick up screen too since you be about a dozen bolts from inside the case. Make sure you get new gaskets if you want to be done in one day. If you're careful the gaskets may be fine but tear one and you'll probably have to wait a week to get one. Or you could have a tube of liquid gasket in the toolbox just in case one tears. Just make sure its high temp type.. Dooden A15 Green Ape

Sounds like the mechanical seal is shot. No big deal (as long as you don't snap off the impeller). The manual has info on it. The Clymer manual may even give more detail. Criswell

Go to the site below and read up on the procedure, print it and keep it beside you when you do the job. Follow it step by step. The most work is putting together the home made tools. I would replace the mechanical seal, oil seal and o-ring, you should pick up a gasket, odds are you won't need it, unless you don't have a new one. It'll be best to remove the cover. At the same time you can clean the oil pick up screen. Thanks, You just answered my, should I pull the engine question...... I have several other things I've been wanting to do, and it'll be easier to have the engine on a table for it.
