carb rebuild

All,
I've been having some problems with the bike running rich, dying at idle and
hard starting so I rebuilt the carb today. The main jet was a 160. Could
that have been of my problem? It was replaced with a 140. The bike is
running nicely now.
I replaced the diaphragm with the Harley model. I priced the bowl gasket at
my Kawa dealer at $31.63, a couple of o-rings at $3 each, and the air cutoff
valve at $46.55. The Harley shop had a kit with the bowl gasket and air
cutoff valve for $25 and change. Thought y'all might like the info.

The main jet has nothing to do with starting your bike. Your problem was
probably fixed when you cleaned your carb. More than likely you had some
gunk in your float valve that was causing it to run rich and exhibit the
symptoms you described.

No doubt even something as simple as a half can of SeaFoam in the tank
and a long ride would have fixed it.
Maybe even some Marvel Mystery Oil in the gas could have solved it.

I just go to the local Carquest and buy it, sure at seven bucks a can
its expensive, but sure does work good.

dude your probably running rich. Im at sea level and at ~50 deg F. I
went all the way down to stock 40pilot and 148 main with dynojet
needle in the the middle groove, with K&N filter and finally seven
disks with end cap on the suppertrapp. 2 1" holes in the top of the
air box. I opted to leave the backfire screen in. Float level is
critical. Dead even with the mating surface of the bowl and carb.
Runs gooood and gas milage is 38-43mpg with highway miles and city.
55 mph=50+mpg.
I found last week that the suppertrapp going from 5 disks is rich to
7disk good. Exhuast finally smells good. Spark plug is gathering all
the crud I burnt to chamber running 93octane for the last 12000
miles. (a big waste). Burns less oil as I just found out over the
last 3days running the bike From jax fl to anderson s.c and back.
Fwiw I have a good mile long run up a steep bridge. I can just get
the motor to ping with a 136 main jet. 145 I thought I heard pinging
on my test run. at 45degF Mind you the klr always makes a noise when
hitting the throttle at different rpms.
I found a sweet spot in the motor today. 300miles at 82.3 mph I-95
South. at 5500rpm stock gearing. Bike rides like a golding with
sleeping bag and topcase. And homemade highway pegs made of bicycle
handle bars.

If that is a question, then I would say that after the mod it would be
a little more responsive when opening the throttle.
