Listers, In 1903 Horatio Nelson Jackson made the first cross country drive in an automobile from San Francisco to New York City. It took him a bit over two months. I just watched the DVD Horatio's Drive which is in my opinion a very good documentary by Ken Burns. All I could think about while watching it was how this is what many KLR riders dream about doing. It included beautiful views, exciting challenges in overcoming natural obstacles and mechanical breakdowns along with ushering in a new era of motor vehicle travel. Many of the same things a KLR adventurer might face at one time or another. For those wanting to see it the info is: Horatio's Drive - America's First Road Trip ISBN: 0-7806-4144-2 It's a PBS film so may be available from your local PBS station. I borrowed a copy from my local library.
