OK, I am 61, been riding a long time, and was feeling sad about my wife who I was visiting in a hospital. Went for a little late night ride after leaving her at 1 am and found myself listening to a Harley next to me at a light. I have not done this kind of shit since I was 40 sumpthin. He blipped his throttle and I answered and we took off at the light. He beat me to the next light, so we did it again. He beat me by not so much, but the KLR did the coolest wheelie across the intersection. I had forgotten how much fun street racing was. The Harley was pretty quick, but he should have been embarrassed that my old KLR stayed so close. I can't tell the wife what I was out doing, so I thought I would share it here. Well, this cheered me up. I think it did the same for you. I hope things get better for your wife. Mike Martin, Louisville, KY [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Now you know that racing is dangerous, illegal and you are being totally...................................Cool! I love a good in-your-face-right-back-at-ya story! I'm sure you both had a lot of fun. There will be stories back at the club house how the mighty ape hanger blew the doors off of some old fart on a dirtbike! West

Harley's can be pretty fast, depending on the rider, but Sportsters should be easy to beat. He must have been on a big one. But he didn't do a wheelie across the intersection! I'm sure he is jealous of that, for sure. Good Work! Robert Wichert P.Eng. LEED AP +1 916 966 9060 FAX +1 916 966 9068 ===============================================

One of the guys I used to work with had a 1200cc Sportster and said it would beat it's bigger brothers in a roll on. He also had a big twin so I figured he knew what he was talking about. Alan Henderson A13 sidehack

I remember reading in a probably Cycle World maybe 10 or 15 years ago, a guy put this big bore / stroker kit.....whatever in an 883 Sportster and made it 1800 cc. He claimed he was getting sport bike type quarter mile speeds with it and was beating and surprising some sport bike guys at red lights. I think he had to modify the top of the frame and tank some to make the taller engine fit but a casual glance you would take it as just an old slow 883. The problem he had was the wimpy swing arm was bending under the awesome torque. If I had all the money and time I would build a street tracker along the lines of Harley's flat track bikes using the 883 as a base as there are plenty of used ones fairly cheap. And why did Honda quit making the 1800 VTX. Seemed like a monster street cruiser? Criswell Sent from my iPad

A big 1200 cc Sportster is pretty fast, but the small ones are slower than a KLR, based on the specs. Lots of Harleys take off as fast as they can, but I am able to keep up pretty well. Scares them, I think. I have gotten the jump on a few and beat them to the speed limit, and then they are SURE to hit it hard at the next light. They don't wheelie like a KLR though. Having the race where 5% was on gravel and the results would of been different!

On paper, the 1200 Sportster should be the fastest Harley (excepting the XR1200 and V-rod - uncommon models), when considering power-to-weight ratio. Bone stock numbers: 1200 Sportster: 61RWHP @ 496lbs dry = 8.13 lbs/hp vs. Road King: 67RWHP @737lbs dry = 11 lbs/hp and, as a comparison (and an illustration of my point) KLR 650: 38RWHP @384lbs dry = 10.1 lbs/hp Suzuki DL1000 (also a v-twin): 92RWHP @460lbs dry = 5 lbs/hp Ducati Diavel (also a v-twin): 134RWHP @456lbs dry = 3.40 lbs/hp Yamaha YZF-R1 : 142RWHP @ 390lbs dry = 2.74 lbs/hp So, depending on the rider, the KLR should run light-to-light quite well with a big Harley.

Good point. The huge baggers are not so quick. It's the stripped down 1200/1600 models that can move out. Plus some of those Harley riders pack a few pounds more than I do too! HA! Robert Wichert P.Eng. LEED AP +1 916 966 9060 FAX +1 916 966 9068 ===============================================
