Quoting their web page: "tank will fit both the A and the E models 1987-2011. The tank will be between 8.5-10 gallons and will be available as a standard screw cap tank or with the option to utilize the stock locking fuel cap. The tank also utilizes an internal lift pump to provide the ability to use the full capacity of the tank while maintaining a lowered Center of Gravity." The only problem is it will cost $550! $550 isn't bad at all. Check out how much the Touratech large 5 gal gas tank costs for the BMW F800GS: http://www.touratech-usa.com/Store/PN-048-0384/Large-Fuel-Tank-BMW-F800GS-Painted-Matte-Black Vik Banerjee threeohm@... www.thelazyrando.com

That Safari tank is a different manufacturer. Safari Tanks is based in Australia, IMS is in the USA. It's obvious that the new IMS tank is being made because of the Safari tank, my question is: Will the existing 6.6 gallon IMS tank for 87-07 KLR's still be available, or is the new one replacing it? ________________________________ From: Vik Banerjee To: david.r.nichols@... I hope they go with a full 10 gal tank. Getting 100% more gas volume is a worthwhile improvement for $550. safe riding, Vik Banerjee threeohm@... www.thelazyrando.com

I'd bet they go with one tank, which may vary in size due to "molding variations", not unlike the current tak, nominally 6.6 gallons, of which the manufacturer say can vary up to .5 gallons in either direction. In practice, I have never heard of one that took less that 6.6 gallons. Mine took 7.2 the first time I filled it, and may have stretched some since then. I have heard of tanks that take up to 7.5 gallons. If IMS says their new tank will vary from 8.5 to 10 gallons, I'd guess they are tacitly confessing to familiarity with the vagaries of their molding process.

Here's my analysis. :) I think IMS will keep the 6.6 gallon tank in production. They still sell the 5.5 gallon tanks that don't have the built in radiator shrouds, and have been all along. The tooling is long paid for. Another reason is pricing, they would still own the market for $250 plastic tanks. I for one won't be spending $550 on a tank. I don't need that much fuel (Has anyone calculated how much 10 gallons weighs?) when I already have a bike that comes with one of the largest tanks from the factory. And the integral fuel pump goes against the KLR ruggedness (another thing to break). I do want a 6.6 gallon IMS for my A11 but more for the crash protection it provides. I think IMS made the new 8-10 gallon one to answer to the Safari tank that also fits 87 and up KLR's. IMS saw they would be giving up a market share to Safari by not having an 08 and up model for these popular bikes. IMS designed it to fit 87-present models as a bonus (just like Safari did). I think the difference is that 08 and up KLR's are wider in the radiator area so naturally it will fit the A models. I agree there will be a variance in capacity. I think the 8-10 gallon is an estimate because they haven't actually finished the tank to measure actual volume. -David ________________________________ From: Jud To: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com Sent: Tuesday, September 27, 2011 11:50 AM Subject: [DSN_KLR650] Re: Have you seen the new IMS 8-10 gallon fuel tank? seat foam upgrade

Dudes, I ripped into my seat a few years ago after buying a good chunk of high density open-cell foam. I found the original was made up of 2 coverings of vinyl and an old piece of moldy foam. The new foam was shaped with a knife and, although not comfortable by Goldwing standard, was a great improvement over the original. 10)Put seat back on. Feels great so far but haven't gone for a long ride yet. J#3

My .02 worth... the variance in capacity (8.5 -10) gallons of fuel is not because of moldings but because of materials....mainly plastic. The tank is going to shrink in size in cold weather (8.5) & expand in the heat (10).I have an XR 400 with an Acerbis "5.8" gallon plastic tank & it does the same thing.
