I guess guys named "Nichols" must be hard on rims. I would be very leery of continuing to ride on it. It would be bad to have the crack spread and have a failure at highway speed. I've had Woody's Wheel Works fix a bent rim. They might be able to tell you if they can do a repair on it. They can replace the entire rim and relace it as well. I probably have my eye on the same carb. Mine is working fine now, but a couple of ham-fisted forays into it have left me concerned for its long-term health. If your problem is with carburetion, I should think that a new carb would cure it. before you spring for one, however, you might save some money by checking out a few things on yours. First, do the obvious; be sure your new diaphragm is indeed intact, the vacuum line to the petcock is not leaking or collapsing, that fuel flows when you crank the starter, and that your carb is venting properly. Check the float height and the operation and condition of the float needle. Revisit all the jets you cleaned, and check for sufficient valve lash. The non-obvious item is the coasting enricher. Be careful taking it apart, as there is a little spring that can boing out of there and disappear forever. Check the condition of that diaphragm, and ensure that the little brass piston is free of varnish and that it moves freely in its bore. Mine was sticking intermittently, which meant the bike would run fine for a while, then go rich and refuse to idle or transition cleanly off idle. If it seems easier simply to buy the carb, by all means do so. There are (or will be) others for sale.
