question about turn signals.

My $500 1997 KLR650 came without turn signals.
My question is: can I buy 4 rear turn signals and use them for each location? I see the fiche says the front part numbers are both 23037 and the rears are both 23037A which tells me they can be swapped from right to left. The fronts appear to be longer but is the only difference? I would like to buy 4 rears, especially since BikeBandit only has the rears in stock (at $16 each for Bikemaster brand). I know I need to have a minimum distance between them to be legal. Anyone know what this distance is in Texas?

Although I have turn signals on my bikes today, that wasn't always the case. Does TX require turn signals? Maybe check the TX Transport Dept website for an answer on distance between. Here in PA, many sportbikes have aftermarket turn signals and license plate holders that don't seem to confirm to any rule other than it is on the back of the bike.

So do you know if they will fit in all 4 places?

No, never tried switching r to f. Remember there are indexing pins on the stalk bases that may prevent required orientation when using a rear on the front.

I just found this. According to Dualsportplus.com one part number may be used in the front or rear positions.

Had a small..... disagreement with an unyelding object with a rear signal light a couple weeks ago so I can confirm that signal light assemblies will interchange from side to side. From front to back the fronts have slightly longer stalks but with the exception of that front to back will also interchange. Of interest the aftermarket one I got through my dealer from Motovan (Canada) listed the same part for all four corners @ 12.99 ea I believe. It was the right length for the front. In my case I swapped the stalk with the original, even though one was OEM and one was aftermarket and all was well. The biggest difference between the OEM and the aftermarket unit was the OEM was gasketed at the lens and the aftermarket wasn't...Have a great day......Greg

I just checked a spare OEM rear signal and it has two (2) indexing pins on the stalk base, so is can be mounted on the body panel 180 degs one way or the other. That makes each turn signal is universal (fits any position and can be properly oriented).
Now the only problem you'll have with mounting rear signals in the front positions is that the wires will be reversed. Since the electons will now be flowing in the opposite direction with each flash cycle, the opposite end of the bulb's element will get hot first. Since the lamp bulb wasn't "broken in" that way, it might limit the normal bulb lifespan. Try it anyway....... Yea, right!

I have spares, never needed one, but all this talk about turn signals and I am sure my blue pig will want one next week...especially since the Earl-BRO's. will be here KLRing for three days next week.
