I believe the problem stemmed from a worn plastic plunger cap that was allowing the choke cable to slide in and out of the cap because the rim is too worn to lock the cable securely and the boot looked like it had worked loose. A spark tester is better than using the plug for this test. 'one' more thing to check--
Next time you adjust the valves, (or sooner)
Check the cam-timing closely and see that the alignment arrows (on the cams) are dead-nuts on; as shown in the Clymers/OEM manual. It is easy for it to be off on tooth on either cam or both.

I'm missing the hose clamp for the airbox to carb boot. does anyone know
where to get one?
