El Burro Rojo, my 2004, has been sporting this mod for years. Although, I
trimmed mine to fit and turned the bolts around so that the flush heads face
out.

I'd probably do it if I needed another shield, but there is one matter of concern. A real windshield is much thicker which is perhaps less likely to cut the driver's head off if the bike stops considerably quicker than he.

That was impressive. Regarding the KLR chasability factor, there was an
article in Motorcycle Consumer News a while back on motor patrol training.
They practice a lot of off-road maneuvers such as crossing ditches, up and
down stairs, etc. I took an Advanced Rider course last summer that was
taught by a pair of motor patrol officers. We practiced some slow speed
maneuvers that they used in their Motor Patrol class and it was clear that
they were learnable. It was also clear that it would be much easier to
learn those maneuvers on someone elses bike, or at least a bike that was set
up with crash bars fore and aft.
